Boob Tube to Booze Tube

Ahh, the television set. Remember those sturdy, handsome wooden boxes that provided hours upon hours of mindless entertainment? Chances are if you are reading this, you’re old enough to recall these classic household gems. I’ll never forget ours with those clunky turn dials. Fortunately, these hardy home fixtures seem to be making a major comeback. Why you ask? Because everything old is new again, thanks to Pinterest.

Pumpkin Ale Mini Muffins with Bourbon Cream Cheese Icing

Either you love pumpkin spiced beers or you hate them. There’s little room for indifference. And people are adamant about letting you know which side they fall on. Wars have been waged on all social media fronts (which are incredibly entertaining, I must say) about why this is either the best beer style known to man or the worst, most horrific thing to happen to the craft beer world.

Banana Beer Bread with Maple Greek Yogurt

I often find myself trying to come up with more and more ways to effectively incorporate beer into every meal, especially breakfast. Maybe it’s the ridiculousness of having beer with breakfast; or maybe it’s the challenge of cooking with beer that intrigues me. Or perhaps my interest in beer has turned into a slight obsession, especially with the rapidly growing beer scene here in Pittsburgh. I’m guessing it’s a mixture of all three, if I’m completely honest with myself. So for this week’s post, I decided to take on this intriguing and delicious challenge of beering my breakfast.

Dogfish Head Inn

I jumped head first into the enticing, endless world of craft beers over a decade ago, and I have Dogfish Head brews to thank for it. I’ll never forget the moment when I tasted the bitter, robust flavor of their infamous 60 Minute IPA. It had me spellbound, completely smitten. Beer can taste like this? There are more beers like this?! Yep. I was a goner; hook, line and sinker. There was no turning back after that. And it turns out that my curiosity only grew the further I looked into this hop-forward world of fermented beverages…

Yes we CAN

East End Brewing Co. sure does have a can-do attitude. On June 3rd, East End contracted We Can Mobile Canning of Danville, Pa to facilitate the canning of 20 barrels of Big Hop, East End’s flagship IPA.

Beer Peeps

It’s Easter, for Peeps® sake! A very Hoppy Easter to you and your family! This year, we remixed an Easter staple to include our favorite drink: BEER! These boozed up homemade marshmallow treats are made with Penn Brewery’s Ginger Beer. The ginger beer was our obvious go-to because we love the flavor profile of ginger, especially when it’s in candied form. So make these for some-bunny verrry special. Or keep them for yourself when you’re having a bad hare day… We hope you enjoy this peeps offering…Okay, I’ll stop it.

Herb and Panko Crusted Goat Cheese Salad with Hop Farm IPA Salad Dressing

These past couple of frigid Pittsburgh days have left me desiring something a little bit more tropical. Okay, maybe not tropical but definitely something fresh and bright to help me thaw out a bit. We’ve had quite an impressive stint of sweet recipes, which have undoubtedly kept us warm this winter. But now I feel that it’s time to revisit the savory side of cooking. Our next beer-centric recipe needs to pack a massive punch of flavor, highlight a delicious Pittsburgh brew, and have a light, freshness to wake me up from what seems to be an eternal winter slumber of stews and soups.

Beer Advent Calendar 2014

beer advent calendar day 21Day 21. Winter Shredder by Cisco Brewers in Nantucket ,MA. This Braggot style Ale (8.8% ABV) is just what you need to warm you up while you are shredding some mighty fresh gnar. This beer pours a deep amber with a thick, foamy head that is reminiscent of blustery, winter storm clouds. The aroma is enticing with hints of caramel, chocolate, and ripe apples. We tasted the toasted malts, a little bit of caramel, and the perfect amount of boozy alcohol. So, next time you are planning to shred some serious gnar, throw a couple of these bad boys in your fanny pack (yes Pittsburgh is the home of Fannypacks, especially at Kennywood) and keep yourself warm and toasted on those frigid slopes. Cheers!

Peanut Butter Cup Porter Molten Lava Cake

We enjoyed watching the movie “Chef” the other night. Long story short, it’s about a chef who loses his upscale restaurant job and then starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative swagger. In one of the more epic scenes, a food critic claims that he would much rather have the chef…

“sit on his face on a warm day after a brisk walk in the park than have to take another bite of his uninspired chocolate lava cake”…
